A program I recently saw advertised in our city seems as though it may be a good opportunity for both the city and the students. RoadRunner/Your Cable Co Here are running a promotion that any student (k-8) who logs 50 hours of community service in a year, as well as holding a 2.5 GPA (yes our education systems aren't so hot here) will be eligible for a drawing providing 100 students with a laptop as well as a free year of high speed internet service. I would approach Warner about this one...They are still the cable co right?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24427664.post-20969304853360065272007-02-03T05:04:00.000+01:002007-02-03T05:04:00.000+01:00I really enjoyed your blog, esp. since I am a Youn...I really enjoyed your blog, esp. since I am a Youngstown-American as well. I appreciate you raising some of the educational issues (technology, inequality, etc.) because without a better education system we can't complete any real redevelopment of Youngstown. Good schools attract families and add stability and once you have better schools you have higher housing prices and higher housing feeds the tax base to go back into the schools. It is cyclical. I don't want to imply that I am not a proponent of affordable housing, but the schools are part of the solution. I like your ideas about the technology non-profit extending into Youngstown, it is an idea I had many years ago as a teenager. I substitute taught in the Youngstown schools a couple years ago and now teach in Brooklyn, NY and the digital divide is tremendous!!!! I finally bitched and complained and got 4 outdated computers placed in my classroom for the use of all 225 of our high school students to share. And how can they compete later on?!!??!! My point is that we need to think outside the box as Scracic (who I had a class with afew years ago...)suggested. I am currently working on my Masters degree at Teachers College-Columbia University in NYC (taking some education policy classes)and hope to return to Youngstown to help revitalize the community. I could go on...but will spare you ;) I enjoyed your blog and if you like, check mine out as well:<br />www.rustbeltsurvivor.blogspot.comsheilakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06832634339387171931noreply@blogger.com
